Share your memories of your choir experiences and/or tribute to Father Oldershaw as a comment to this post or as a comment to one of the pictures.
I am grateful to have this opportunity to share my gratitude and reflect on the impact Father O has had on my life. While I am sure he is aware that he failed to make me a singing sensation despite heroic efforts, in many smaller ways his influence and example and the experiences he allowed myself and my fellow choirmembers at Holy Name Catherdral to participate in deeply impacted who we are today. We have grown up and moved in many directions but we will always be the Original Ding Dong Dollies and that is something special!!!
He taught me to try even if I was afraid. He taught me the importance and joy of sharing with those who were in need. He taught me to appreciate the many gifts I enjoyed thanks to my family, my education, my friends and my faith. He gave us so many fun and special memories of singing together and an appreciation of music and song. By example, he showed us how to get involved, stretch our abilities, work as a team and succeed through honest effort. His faith in us taught us to believe in ourselves. His example of faith in God taught us to have faith in God. His confidence in our abilities inspired our self-confidence.
As a child, I had only a child's appreciation of all he did rarely considering the long hours he spent preparing for practice and for performances. Hardly ever considering that being our Choir Director was only one small part of his responsibilities. I did not marvel at all of his musical talents or his teaching or preaching or consoling.
I appreciate all of those things now. I am blessed to have had a small part in Father Oldershaw's long and wonderful ministry. Father, you are a brilliant teacher and a gifted human being. Thank you for sharing so generously of your time and talents. I pray that God will continue to bless you abundantly and am looking forward to the party!
